Étretat was written and performed as a final project for a Beginning Composition class in the Fall semester of 2019. The assignment was to compose a short song based on a separate art medium. I was inspired by a series of paintings from Claude Monet capturing the coast of Normandy in a small city called Étretat. Repeating motifs were meant to capture the ebbing of waves. The rising and falling becomes a bit more aggressive and dissonant as a storm brews. Finally, the storm subsides and the ocean is peaceful and serene.
